Support Us

There are many ways to get involved with Sense Ability Matters, whether that's volunteering your time, fundraising, making a donation, or becoming a member.

Your support makes a real difference. Without it, we wouldn't be able to reach as many people as we do, or deliver the wide range of services that help people with sight and hearing loss live confidently and stay connected.

Every contribution, big or small, helps us continue this vital work in our community.

Membership

At SAM, our members aren't just supporters, they're part of how we're governed, helping to shape our services and steer our future.

Our members are at the heart of everything we do. They help set our direction, attend our Annual General Meetings, and make sure the people who rely on our services are never an afterthought. Many of our members have lived experience of sensory loss themselves, and that perspective is invaluable.

Membership is open to anyone who is vision impaired, Deaf, hard of hearing, disabled, or living with a long-term health condition, as well as anyone with an interest in supporting our work. For just £20 a year (or £35 for a dual membership) you'll receive a welcome pack, regular newsletters in your preferred format, invitations to two free social events, and a vote at our AGM.

Volunteering

Could you spare a few hours to make a real difference to someone living with sight or hearing loss in your community?

Sometimes the smallest things make the biggest difference… a familiar face, a chat over a cup of tea, a lift to an appointment that would otherwise be impossible.

Our volunteers make those moments happen every day. They're at the heart of SAM, and the people we support would be the first to tell you how much it means.

We're currently looking for volunteer befrienders and volunteer drivers, but we're always happy to hear from people with other skills to offer whether that's admin, marketing, or something else entirely.

Fundraising

As a charity, SAM relies on the generosity of people like you. Every pound raised goes directly towards our services — from specialist equipment in our lending library to events and activities that help people feel less isolated and more connected.

£7 pays for a telephone befriender for 1 month (making approx 100 calls pcm for 30 minutes each)
£10 pays for someone to attend a social group (community voice)
£20 could pay for someone to attend a living well with sight loss course
£50 pays for someone to attend a counselling session
£100 would help someone purchase an alexa device
£200 would pay for meta glasses for a vision impaired person

Ways To Support Us

Make a regular donation

A monthly gift, however small, helps us plan ahead and deliver consistent, reliable support to the people who need us most. Just a few pounds a month can help someone with sight loss stay independent, feel less isolated, and live life on their own terms.

Make a one-off donation

If you'd prefer to make a single contribution, every gift is gratefully received and put straight to work. Whether it's a liquid level indicator so someone can make a cup of tea independently or counselling for someone who is losing their sight, your donation makes a tangible difference to real people in our community.

Take on a challenge

Whether you've always wanted to run a 5k, cycle a hundred miles, or do something completely out of your comfort zone - why not do it for SAM? You'll have a cause worth training for, and every pound you raise goes directly towards supporting people with sensory loss in our community.

Fundraise at work

Did you know many employers will match whatever their staff raise for charity, doubling the impact without any extra effort? Check whether your employer has a matching scheme, and your fundraising for SAM could go twice as far.
